En 2020, l'humanité a été presque entièrement décimée par des créatures aveugles mais douées d'une ouïe surpuissante. Lee Abbott, son épouse Evelyn, leur fille sourde Regan et leurs fils Marcus et Beau tentent de survivre avec des provisions trouvées dans une ville désertée. La famille communique grâce à la langue des signes et ce faisant, parvient à faire le moins de bruit possible et à ne pas attirer les créatures. Mais un jour, Beau, 4 ans, active un jouet bruyant que sa soeur lui a donné, et se met donc en danger. Il est attaqué. Un an plus tard, Regan se sent toujour responsable de la mort de son frère, Evelyn va bientôt accoucher et Lee tente, sans succès, de fabriquer une radio pour entrer en contact avec le monde extérieur...
