Un an après avoir frôlé la mort à cause d'une maladie grave, Kate n'est plus tout à fait la même. Elle ne fait attention à rien et ne mène pas une vie saine, ce qui inquiète beaucoup son entourage. Elle qui rêve de devenir chanteuse professionnelle travaille dans une boutique de décorations de Noël, déguisée en petit lutin vert. Mais même comme vendeuse, elle n'est pas très fiable. Un soir, elle engage la conversation avec Tom, un beau jeune homme, qui observe les oiseaux devant le magasin. Ils se revoient par hasard quelque temps après et passent la soirée ensemble, tombant sous le charme l'un de l'autre...
