Dans une ville du Mexique, à la fin des années 1950, Lesley Blanch retrouve son mari, Romain Gary, très fatigué, en pleine écriture d'un récit. Alors qu'elle fait conduit l'écrivain à Mexico, Lesley commence à lire le texte de son époux. Celui-ci est consacré à sa mère, Nina Kacew, et débute en 1924 à Wilno, en Pologne. A cette époque, Romain, encore enfant, mène une rude existence avec Nina, une femme à la forte personnalité, convaincue que son fils deviendra un jour un personnage important.
